2020 Toyota Corolla Cross debuts in Thailand – TNGA platform; petrol and hybrid powertrains; from RM132k –

This is the new Toyota Corolla Cross, which has just made its first global debut in Thailand, and will be launched in other markets in the near future. Developed based on the concept of “Corolla meets SUV,” the model rides on the TNGA-C platform that is also found in the current C-HR and Corolla, paired with petrol and hybrid powertrains.

Despite the “Corolla” in its name, the SUV appears to have very little in common with the sedan in terms of exterior styling. Instead, the Corolla Cross appears more like a downsized RAV4 with its downturned front grille that meets with a pair of slim headlamps. The lower apron also sports the RAV4’s black trim just below the grille, which is complemented by a skid plate and fog lamps beneath it.

Along the sides, the Corolla Cross has smoother lines when compared to the “blocky” RAV4, with notable cues being the prominent haunches near the shoulder line, black cladding over the wheels and an extension of the window line towards the roof-mounted spoiler.

Moving to the rear, we find wraparound, two-piece taillights and a simple tailgate design that sees the Toyota and model badge be arranged vertically above the arched number plate recess. Just like the front, the lower apron here gets a skid plate to reinforce the model’s rugged nature.

When it comes to dimensions, the Corolla Cross shares the same 2,640 mm wheelbase as the C-HR, but occupies a larger footprint, as it measures 4,460 mm long (+100 mm compared to the C-HR), 1,825 mm wide (+30 mm) and 1,620 mm tall (+ 55 mm). By comparison, the RAV4, which is underpinned by the TNGA-K platform, is even larger, measuring 4,600 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, 1,685 mm tall and with a 2,690 mm wheelbase.

Bringing in some potential competitors into the comparison, the Honda HR-V measures 4,334 mm long, 1,772 mm wide, 1,605 mm tall and has a wheelbase spanning 2,610 mm. Meanwhile, the Mazda CX-30 is 4,395 mm long, 1,795 mm wide, 1,540 mm tall and has a 2,655 mm wheelbase, and the Subaru XV is 4,465 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,615 mm tall and with a 2,665 mm wheelbase.

Even though the SUV uses the same TNGA-C platform as the C-HR and Corolla, it doesn’t get rear double wishbones like those two models and instead adopts a torsion beam setup – McPherson struts continue to be used at the front.

Inside, we finally get to see some “Corolla-ness,” as the SUV’s dashboard, centre stack and centre console are pretty much identical to its sedan sibling. Toyota says the Corolla Cross offers ample interior space for up to five passengers and up to 487 litres of space with a puncture repair kit (440 litres with a temporary spare tyre).

Features for the Thailand market include a multi-info instrument cluster display, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, drive mode selector, a nine-inch touchscreen head unit, T-Connect telematics, reclining rear seats (up to six degrees) and a powered tailgate with hands-free access.

As for safety items, seven airbags come as standard and the Toyota Safety Sense suite is available on higher-end variants. The suite includes the Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beam, Blind Spot Monitor, an around-view monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

For the Thailand market, the Corolla Cross will be offered in four variants – 1.8 Sport, Hybrid Smart, Hybrid Premium and Hybrid Premium Safety. The 1.8 Sport is the base option here and will be priced at 989,000 baht (RM132,255) with a flex fuel 2ZR-FBE 1.8 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder that produces 140 PS at 6,000 rpm and 177 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, paired with a Super CVT-i.

Further up the range, the Hybrid Smart goes for 1.019 million baht (RM139,295), the Hybrid Premium for 1.089 million baht (RM148,945) and the Hybrid Premium Safety for 1.199 million baht (RM163,990). All three get a hybridised 2ZR-FXE 1.8 litre NA four-pot that serves up 98 PS at 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm at 3,600 rpm.

The mill is paired with an e-CVT and works together with an electric motor rated at 72 PS and 163 Nm to provide a total system output of 122 PS. Both powertrains are also offered for the C-HR sold in Thailand, which is priced from 979,000 to 1.159 million baht (RM133,898 to RM158,517) there

Buyers there will have seven colours to choose from, including Metal Stream Metallic, Red Mica Metallic, Attitude Black Mica, Celestite Gray Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Nebula Blue and Graphite Metallic.

VIDEO: 2020 Triumph Rocket 3 R has no table manners –

Some readers might remember a BMW Motorrad video at the launch of the S1000RR from 10 years ago which showed a tablecloth, pulled by the super bike, yanked out from atop a banquet table, leaving the dinner setting in place. The video above is Triumph’s attempt to replicate the trick, this time using the tremendous torque from the 2020 Triumph Rocket 3 R.

Showing that absolutely no fornications were given, a small table setting, complete with glasses of wine and fine crockery, is comprehensively destroyed by the action of the Rocket 3 R pulling away the table cloth. The video ends with the words, “no table manners.”

As the successor to the previous generation Rocket 3, the current model Rocket 3 R comes with a 2.5-litre, inline three-cylinder mill, set longitudinally in the frame. While the Rocket 3 produces 167 PS at 6,000 rpm, what is astounding is the torque number, 221 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

Hinckley’s power cruiser also comes in a Rocket 3 GT variant that has taller handlebars for a more upright riding position compared to the Rocket 3 R’s flatter bars. Weight has taken a beating on the Rocket 3 as well, with a claimed 249 kg dry weight versus the rather porky 362 kg of the previous model.

The Rocket 3 has a seat height set at a low 773 mm, with adjustable foot controls to suit rider ergonomics. The Rocket 3 R has mid-mounted controls that are adjustable vertically in two positions while the Rocket 3 GT has three foot forward control positions and an adjustable pillion backrest.

The Bend makes Supercars hub offer

The Bend Motorsport Park managing director Dr Sam Shahin is willing to put his spat with Supercars aside and form a hub for the series, as a fresh coronavirus outbreak threatens the current revised schedule.

The South Australian circuit was left off the latest version of the 2020 calendar, unveiled last month, in favour of Sandown Raceway in Melbourne, sparking a scathing open letter to Supercars from Shahin.

Since then, however, Australia’s COVID-19 picture has changed drastically, with Melbourne back to Stage 3 restrictions and all Melbourne-based teams out of Victoria and on the road indefinitely due to a fresh outbreak in the state capital.

While the current six-week lockdown in Melbourne will be over before the scheduled date for Sandown, September 19-20, its understood Supercars is looking at other options for that event.

They include Winton in the north of Victoria, or, as first flagged by, a reprieve for The Bend on its original date.

Despite the recent spat with Supercars, Shahin says The Bend is ‘willing and able’ to welcome Supercars back in the coming months – and perhaps not just for a single sprint round.

He says the on-site hotel and holiday park opens the door for The Bend to become a hub, where multiple rounds could be held in quick succession to ensure a 2020 season can be completed.

“The Bend is ready, willing, and able to step up and assist at short notice should Supercars require additional rounds this year, in light of the current situation in Victoria,” Shahin told The Race Torque.

“We have the ability to make the Rydges Pit Lane hotel available to the teams and the garages and our broader facilities are there for them to operate out of for as long as required.

“We have all the provisions in place to provide the social distancing or complete isolation of the teams from the public if required.

“The track itself is ready to go and if they wanted to run multiple rounds in quick succession, they could do that as well – using different circuit layouts if they wished.

“We have no doubt that South Australian motorsport fans would welcome Supercars back to The Bend this year.”

The five Victorian teams have all relocated to New South Wales after a dramatic border run on Monday evening.

Most are already set up at Sydney Motorsport Park ahead of next weekend’s round, while Kelly Racing has based itself at the Kelly family farm in Mildura.

It’s currently not clear how long the teams will need to stay out of Victoria, however it’s likely to include the upcoming trips to Darwin and Townsville.

It could even be extended to take in The Bend should that plan come to fruition.

What’s the Best New-Car Deal for July 2020?

If recent guidance from health officials has you leery of public transportation or ride-sharing amid new spikes in COVID-19, a personal vehicle can potentially reduce such risk, but finding a deal on that vehicle is another matter entirely.

July is historically an unremarkable month for discounts, ranking in the middle third of months for each of the past seven years when comparing new-car incentives, per Motor Intelligence. Still in the thick of the 2020 model year, which accounts for 93% of new-car inventory on as of this writing, dealers neither feel the squeeze of an incoming model year nor find a glut of cars from the outgoing model year. Complicating matters, J.D. Power notes that incentives spending has tapered in May and June after automakers flooded the market with deals in April to prop up COVID-hampered sales.

Still, with the ongoing pandemic hampering consumer demand, new-car sales are coming off a dour second quarter — down 34% for the vast majority of the industry, per Automotive News — and incentives remain readily available. We scoured the market’s slowest sellers among popular nameplates last month to find the best deals in July. Here are some discounts we spied, all of which expire Aug. 3.

Buick Envision

  • Factory discount: Varies depending on MSRP, with $6,794 off advertised example
  • Price after discounts: Varies depending on discount, but potentially around $30,000 to $45,000 if Buick’s advertised employee pricing signals a uniform percentage discount
  • Approximate factory savings: Up to around 15% off

Employee pricing returns to GM’s semi-luxury brand, with $6,794 off Buick’s well-equipped example of the 2020 Envision SUV, an all-wheel-drive Premium trim priced around $45,000. That works out to some 15% off. If employee pricing exacts the same percentage off all Envision trims, that could amount to an SUV that ranges from roughly $30,000 to $45,000 after discounts, depending on trim levels and factory options.

Of course, that’s a big if. Asked for more information on the Envision’s employee pricing, a GM spokesperson did not immediately respond. But the 2020 Envision averaged 103 days to sell through most of June, far exceeding the industry’s 87-day average for all model-year 2020 vehicles. Whatever the employee price, dealers should be motivated to strike a deal. That said, those looking alternately for discount financing may find nothing doin’. Buick didn’t advertise any discount rates in the markets we surveyed.

Jeep Renegade

  • Factory discount: $3,000 to $4,500, depending on trim level and region
  • Price after discounts: About $19,500 to $36,000, depending on specifics
  • Approximate factory savings: About 8-19% off

Jeep’s smallest SUV has some of the brand’s largest percentage discounts, with $3,000 to $4,500 in cash discounts depending on region and trim level. That amounts to roughly 8-19% off, depending where and what you buy. It’s a hefty discount at the high end, which is no surprise for an SUV that averaged 108 days on dealer lots through most of June. Those who finance at standard rates with Jeep parent Fiat Chrysler Automobiles can get another $750 off. In lieu of cash discounts, FCA is offering creditworthy shoppers 0% financing for up to 72 months, or 0% for up to 60 months with $750 to $2,250 in bonus cash, depending on region, trim level and if you’re financing through FCA.

GMC Terrain

  • Factory discount: Varies depending on MSRP, with $6,860 off advertised example
  • Price after discounts: Varies depending on discount, but potentially around $25,000 to $41,000 if GMC’s advertised employee pricing signals a uniform percentage discount
  • Approximate factory savings: Potentially around 15% off

GMC, another GM brand, also sports employee pricing. Although the cost structure of such pricing on the Terrain SUV wasn’t immediately clear, GMC’s advertised example — a Denali edition priced at $43,825 — had a hefty $6,860 discount under the program. That amounts to around 15% off. GMC noted that employee pricing doesn’t apply to the Terrain’s base trim level, called the SL, but if other trims qualify for a similar percentage discount as the advertised Denali, it could mean the Terrain’s non-SL trim levels (those being SLE, SLT and Denali) would span roughly $25,000 to $41,000 after discounts, depending on features and trim levels.

Again, a GM spokesperson did not immediately respond when asked for more details on the Terrain’s employee pricing. GMC did not advertise any discount financing in the markets we surveyed, but the Terrain averaged an interminable 142 days at the selling dealer through most of June. That’s a timeframe that suggests dealers will jettison the SUV at any opportunity. Strike a deal while you’re able.

Editor’s Choice: Kia Optima

  • Factory discount: $3,500 to $4,000, depending on trim level
  • Price after discounts: About $20,800 to $29,200, depending on specifics
  • Approximate factory savings: About 12-16% off

Kia’s mid-size sedan languished on dealer lots 96 days through most of June, and while it’s not a huge surprise to see it make our deals story again this month, it may be worth your while to look a little closer than usual if the Optima is on your shopping list: In addition to slow sales and sedans being very much out of vogue right now, Kia announced at the tail end of June that the Optima is being replaced for 2021 by the brand-new K5 (granted, it’s just a rebadging of the Optima with its South Korean name). With K5s due to hit the lots starting this summer, dealers may be eager to clear out their Optima inventory. Factory discounts are $3,500 off for the LX and Special Edition trims, and $4,000 for the S, EX, EX Premium and SX trim levels. If you’re in pursuit of discount financing, creditworthy shoppers can get 0% for up to 72 months.

How We Look for Deals

To look for July deals, we looked at days-to-sell data among the 100 bestselling models in June — specifically June 1-28, the window we gathered the data — which measures how long it takes on average for the selling dealer to move a given car. That illustrates slow sellers, cars on which dealers could be more willing to cut a deal. Then we looked at factory cash discounts and low-interest-rate financing offers that are especially high for the price of the car. After all, $3,000 is a lot more on a Ford Escape than a Ford Expedition.

We lead with cash deals available to shoppers at large, not those that require financing with the automaker or having certain qualifications (e.g., military or college-graduate discounts, loyalty or conquest bonuses, etc.). In calculating the overall percentage discount and pricing after incentives, we focus on the vehicle’s price range from the cheapest incentives-eligible trim level with no factory options to the priciest eligible trim with all factory options. We include the destination charge in such pricing, but we exclude a few other items: taxes and fees, which vary considerably by region, and dealer accessories, which vary considerably by automaker.

Incentives data come from automakers’ websites, while days-to-turn data come from inventory. Remember, our numbers are current as of publication for the markets we survey (generally Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles and New York). Hidden collection of Rare Hemi Parts Found in Garage in southern California

Brad Toles incredible Hemi “Nugget Run”

As has been well documented over time, the “Holy Grail” of high performance American muscle car engines is the 426cid Chrysler Hemi. Today, finding a single original Hemi component is comparable to finding the lost city of Atlantis or a lock of Jimmy Hoffa’s hair. You just don’t find Hemi stuff lying around any more.

Well, never say never.

Brad Toles was lucky enough to find the collection of Hemi parts from the estate of a clearly obsessed Mopar collector. Uncovered in this unassuming two-car garage included everything ranging from Kellogg cranks and a full assortment of classic Hemi intake manifolds to a turn key original crossram-equipped Hemi engine and 33 “matching number” sets of Hemi/Carter carburetors!

Rare Air

Chrysler built street Hemi engines from 1966-71. With a little less than 11,000 street Hemi engines produced during that period, its not surprising that 426cid engine parts are hard to find some 50+ years later. Part of the reason its so hard to find original Hemi parts can be blamed on the fact that these engines were often used for racing, street Hemi engines making the perfect powerplant for dragsters and other high speed vehicles. As you can guess, drag racing is not gentle on engine parts, breakage a common occurrence that was to end the life of many Hemi’s. Perhaps as many as half of those street engines met their demise in route to the finish line.

The celebrated 426cid street Hemi engine utilized unique parts designed to work with those centerpiece hemispherical combustion chambers. Hemi rocker arms and valve train components were dramatically different from Mopar’s wedge engines for obvious reasons. To derive more power from these special engines, aftermarket builders like Edelbrock and Weiand created special intake systems ranging from single four barrel “Rat Roaster” intakes to an assortment of cross ram and inline dual quad systems.

A garage like no other

The collection’s carburetor stock is perhaps the most impressive as you review the parts in this garage, each carb tagged with the component’s part number and date code. The same attention to detail carries over to the line of distributors, each unit not only tagged but tucked into a custom-built wooden carrier to keep each part standing straight up rather than laying in a pile. The wildest distributor of the bunch is the full-race, 16-plug Hemi unit that features a pair of distributors mounted at a 90-degree angle to each other.

Hand in hand with the 16-plug distributor is the set of brand new dual plug cylinder heads that have never been bolted to an engine. The ultimate Hemi of all, a Keith Black Stage III aluminum Hemi race engine is ready for insertion into a worthy drag car.

Five lessons and questions from IndyCar’s GP of Indianapolis

The 2020 NTT IndyCar Series’ second round, the GMR Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the IMS road course, generated several talking points. David Malsher-Lopez discusses the five principal topics.

If the Texas Motor Speedway season-opener showed that the Ganassi cars were on a different level than the opposition, last Saturday’s GP of Indy suggested that the team’s five-time champion Scott Dixon was the differentiator. Yes, the timing of the caution period knocked polesitter Will Power out of contention and he had plenty of pace in reserve, which we didn’t get to see because initially he was going for a two-stop strategy. And it’s very interesting to consider what Graham Rahal might have achieved had he done the same as Power and switched to a three-stop strategy. After all, when the Rahal Letterman Lanigan team gets things right setup-wise, it tends to get them very right – see Barber Motorsports Park in 2019 or Detroit in 2017.

But Dixon’s form was so imperious in the second half of this latest race that public claims by any of his rivals that the #9 CGR-Honda was beatable would be greeted with skepticism.

Off-road specialist Twisted reveals electric Land Rover Defender conversion

Electric powertrain offers a claimed real world range of 200 miles on a single charge

Yorkshire-based Land Rover specialist Twisted has launched a new all-electric powertrain for the classic Defender. The conversion kit is compatible with the Defender 90, 110 and 130 – and it’s available to order now, with prices for conversions starting from £69,950.

The package was developed collaboratively with the Dutch electrification company, Plower, who already offers an electric conversion kit for the Defender. However, Twisted’s system is much more powerful than the Dutch brand’s offering, with a maximum output of 320bhp and 460Nm of torque – 106bhp and 80Nm more than Plower’s kit.

Twisted Defender vs. Mercedes G-Class

Twisted also offers a detuned version of the same powertrain, with 214bhp and 380Nm. The more potent version has a 0–60mph time of 8.2 seconds, while the entry-level model takes 10 seconds to complete the same sprint. Both cars have towing capacity of 3,500kg, which is the same as the original Defender.

Both powertrains use a single, large electric motor fitted under the bonnet, which sends drive to all four wheels through the Defender’s original transfer case and locking differentials. The system is powered by a 60kWh battery pack, which is mounted under the Defender’s floor – and which Twisted claims will provide a real world range of “more than 200 miles.”

Twisted’s electric powertrain more than doubles the Defender Td5’s power output, and it’s only 80bhp shy of the Defender Works V8. To control all that grunt the firm offers a host of chassis upgrades including uprated Bilstein suspension, larger diameter disc brakes, improved calipers and wider alloy wheels with fatter tyres. 

The chassis revisions are fitted as standard to the range-topping electric powertrain, but they’re an optional extra for the entry-level model. However, both systems will be fitted with an EV management system, allowing owners to switch between a range of drive modes, including Sport, Eco and Off-road.

Using a 22kW charging station, the Twisted EV’s battery pack will take around three hours to fully recharge. The system is also compatible with less powerful 11kW domestic charging points, although charge times will be doubled when using this system.

The EV package can also be optioned with a range of cosmetic upgrades, including custom bumpers, mesh radiator grille, bonnet vents and sump guard. Buyers can also opt for Recaro sports seats, a wooden Moto Lita steering wheel, improved sound deadening and a new leather-trimmed panel for the dashboard.

Twisted says the electric drivetrain package is compatible with all Land Rover Defenders – and that its fitment will take around two weeks to complete at the firm’s facility in Bristol.

Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos is the World's Most Secretive Car

If you happen to be particularly wealthy but also a code-breaking genius, Rolls-Royce has created the perfect car for you. The Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos Collection is a strictly limited edition run of 50 cars that contain a secret code known only to two people in the world.

This Wraith comes from the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective, a specialist branch of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars which offers some of the widest-ranging personalization services in the business. Bespoke will not only upgrade and modify existing materials and trim to individual specifications, it can even build you a completely unique vehicle like the $13m Sweptail.

For the Kryptos Collection, Bespoke is working to become one designer’s signature piece. Although Rolls-Royce isn’t entirely clear on the details — preserving some of the mystery and challenge — these special Wraith models incorporate secret messages throughout the vehicle, and challenges owners to solve them.

The code is part of both the exterior and interior, starting right at the Spirit of Ecstasy on the nose. A series of markings — some green, some not — around the figurine’s base is the first step in the rather elaborate code. One big clue seems to come on the embroidered head rests where, instead of the traditional double-R, there’s further green and silver markings.

Elsewhere in the cabin there’s a very Matrix-like roof lining, adapting the starlight headliner into a pattern inspired by streams of data. You’ll also find that pattern on the gallery in the front of the cabin.

The Wraith Kryptos also sports a custom paint color scheme. While it appears like a simple gray affair, with dark gray and “Kryptos Green” coachlines (which also end in a series of markings at the tail), it’s actually a two-layer finish. Delphic Grey features a solid black base color and a mica upper coat, and you’ll see the blue and green flecks under direct sunlight.

If you fancy trying your hand at solving the puzzle, there’s a little bad news: you need to be a Rolls-Royce owner. Only owners have access to the Whispers app that Rolls-Royce has developed to provide unique ownership experiences, and you have to submit your solutions via the app. We don’t know how much the car costs, nor what the reward is for a correct solution…

However, only two people know what the code is. They are Bespoke designer Katrin Lehmann, and Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos — who has the answer in a sealed envelope in his safe at Goodwood.

Lehmann commented:

“The name Kryptos is derived from Ancient Greek, referring to something unseen, hidden and coded, mythical even. Ciphers can be traced through millennia, capturing the imagination of some of the world’s most brilliant minds.

“As a designer, I’ve always been fascinated by the notion that you can communicate messages that are understood by only an elite few, using symbols, pictograms, and ciphers. Finding the key becomes integral to appreciating the full meaning of an item that can otherwise be viewed simply as a work of art.”

Muller-Otvos adds:

“The brilliant and creative minds of our Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective have excelled once again, creating an extraordinarily contemporary and compelling iteration of Wraith. 2021 Corvette stays under $60,000 and earns its racing stripes

The 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has the same starting price of $59,995 as when the redesigned C8 mid-engine Vette launched for 2020. The 2021 Corvette convertible also stays the same at $67,495, including destination, the automaker announced Wednesday.  

For the same price as 2020, the 2021 mid-engine Vette comes with a bit more standard equipment. It also offers new color options and racing stripes. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility highlight the new standard features. Also newly standard is a safety belt monitor that will prevent the driver from shifting out of park into gear if the driver’s seat belt is not buckled. First launched on the 2020 Chevy Traverse as part of Chevy’s Teen Driver safety suite, the function keeps the vehicle fixed in park for 20 seconds or until the driver buckles up. 

More traditional Corvette-minded features for 2021 include two new exterior colors in red metallic and silver metallic, plus a new gray-and-yellow interior combo. Stretching the length of America’s supercar are four dual racing stripes in blue, orange, red, or yellow. There are also three colors of Stinger stripe that only go on the hood. 

Of the performance options and upgrades, magnetic dampers are now available without the Z51 performance package. Ordering opens this month but deliveries aren’t expected until late in the year.
