The W12 is back and making 626 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque under the hood of the Bentley Bentayga. The massive engine propels the massive SUV to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds and onto a top speed of 190 mph.
That makes it the fastest SUV in the world, according to Bentley. It is not, however, the fastest engine in the world to put together. According to Bentley the drivetrain alone takes 10% of the Bentayga’s build time and must be put together by skilled crafts people.
If you don’t need all 12 cylinders, though, you don’t need to use them. Cylinder deactivation means that a whole bank of the engine can be turned off, effectively turning this into a VR6.
Bentley has also introduced a coasting feature it’s calling “sailing” because coasting isn’t bougie enough—mind you, I thought all Bentley buyers did was coast on their ill-gotten gains.
To slow this hulking beast, Bentley has fitted the Bentayga Speed with its biggest brakes. Capable of producing 4,425 lb-ft of stopping torque and withstanding temperatures of up to 1,832 °F. If they were made of brass they’d be a puddle. Instead, they’re made of carbon-ceramic and weigh a total of 44 fewer lbs than iron brakes.
To make it all look the part, Bentley has tinted the headlights, added body skirts, and unique bumpers front and back. The Bentayga Speed sits on 22-inch wheels and there’s “Speed” signature badging all over.
“The new Bentayga has already raised the benchmark for luxury SUVs, against which all others are measured. Ahead of the launch of the new Bentayga Hybrid – the world’s only definitive luxury hybrid – in the coming months, it’s important that we still recognize the customer desire for absolute performance. The new Bentayga Speed remains the fastest SUV in the world, but more that, it’s also the most luxurious version of the new Bentayga – the best of both worlds, the pinnacle.”
