The report states that 5% of highways in India contribute to 60% of fatalities.
According to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCBR), 1,55,622 people lost their lives in road accidents in India in 2021.
India recorded 4,03,116 severe road accidents during the year. As per the data, 46 severe road accidents occurred every hour, which led to 3,71,884 people getting severely injured.
The report states that 5% of highways in India contribute to 60% of fatalities. This could be due to several reasons like bad road conditions, improper maintenance and violation of traffic rules. 60% of accidents were due to over speeding. Excessive speed was also the reason for 56% of the fatalities.
The data also revealed that 15,146 people died as a result of not wearing seat belts in 2020. Furthermore, accidents caused by overloaded vehicles resulted in the death of 10,416 individuals during the same year.
