With all of Stellantis’ brands zapping towards an all-electric future, Alfa Romeo starts its journey to electrification with its newest SUV, the compact Tonale. Slotting in beneath the Stelvio in Alfa’s lineup, the Tonale comes only as a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). On paper, it sounds like it approaches electrification in Alfa style, blending a powerful turbo engine backed up by electric assist with snappy looks—so how much will this all cost? That depends on whether you take the Federal EV Tax Credit into consideration, as Stellantis does.
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale will come in three trims: entry-level Sprint, mid-range Ti, and range-topping Veloce. All three share the same powertrain, a 1.3-liter turbocharged I-4 engine that produces 164 hp by itself and is mated to a 90 kW (roughly 121 hp) electric motor to produce a combined output of 285 hp. This PHEV also drives all four wheels and is capable of 30 miles of all-electric driving thanks to its 15.5-kWh battery pack.
Inside, you’re treated to varying levels of Italian-inspired craftsmanship and materials, and Stellantis’s latest Uconnect 5 infotainment setup that includes Alfa Connect, a personalization app that allows you to customize your dashboard with photos, access Remote Commands to control the Tonale, access subscriptions related to your vehicle’s apps, and more.
When combined with Alfa Romeo’s $1,595 destination charge, the entry level Tonale Sprint comes in at $44,590, the mid-range Ti is priced at $46,590, and the top-level Veloce comes out to $49,090. What none of those prices take into account is the U.S. Federal EV Tax Credit that was amended last year. According to Stellantis, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is eligible to take advantage of the $7,500 tax credit, but that all depends on its final assembly. We reached out to Stellantis to see where the Tonale will be built, because it does appear to meet the rest of the criteria per guidelines on the IRS website.
