Drivers urged to use simple E10 petrol trick to retain fuel economy

Since the introduction of E10 petrol in September 2021, drivers have experienced problems with their vehicles, from their dashboard petrol light being on to a “sputtering” engine. An Express reader, using the handle Dingle6677, has now suggested an alternative option to E10.

They claimed: “I know it’s hassle but try half and half 50 percent of E10 and 50 percent of E5.

“Found fuel consumption (for a) normal car goes fine. Everything is hassle in this country that’s the truth.” (sic)

The Government’s “E10 petrol explained” guidance outlines the changes that have been made including whether E5 and E10 can be mixed.

It says: “If your vehicle is compatible with E10 petrol, there’s no reason you can’t mix the two grades of petrol (E5 97+ and E10 95+).

“It’s perfectly safe to mix them in the same tank or fill up with E5 if E10 is not available.”

It also reassures drivers about using E10 petrol in a non-compatible vehicle.

It continues, saying: “Simply fill up with E5 (‘97+ octane) petrol next time.

“Using a single tank of E10 petrol in a vehicle that is not compatible should not be a major problem. Just make sure you fill up with the correct E5 (‘97+ octane) petrol grade next time.

“Unlike putting petrol into a diesel engine, you shouldn’t need to drain the tank. On a one-time basis, your vehicle will not suffer engine damage as a result.

“Prolonged use of E10 petrol in a non-compatible vehicle, however, may cause harm and is not recommended.”

Other motorists reported issues with the new petrol, with reader TooManyIdiots, seeing a huge drop in fuel economy.

They said: “The average MPG for my one-year-old Dacia has dropped from over 48 mpg to 38.3 mpg since E10 fuel started. Yet another con.”

A third reader, breezy, said: “The stop/start on my (Jaguar) XF 25T has stopped working since I filled with E10 !!!!!”

One Twitter user said: “That claim of lower emissions is total cobblers.

“We are using almost twice as much in the tank, so any slight reduction is negated by vastly higher consumption.”

Another commenter, JamesMcGuckin2, said: “The new E10 fuel at the pumps, you get 33 percent less miles to the gallon than unleaded.

“Therefore you’ll buy more fuel. This outweighs the benefits to the environment.

“E10 fuel is less dense than the original unleaded, hence higher consumption. Happy motoring.”
