When E10 was introduced onto forecourts in September, the Government reassured drivers that the switch from E5 would not cost more at the pumps. For a number of reasons, global fuel prices have gone up since September by more than 12p per litre of petrol, with diesel also increasing in price by more than 14p.

Many drivers are frustrated with the prices they are facing and has resulted in a number of campaigners trying to raise awareness of the issue.

Howard Cox, founder of FairFuelUK, has called on the Government to lower the price of fuel, and introduce an independent regulator to monitor fuel prices to protect motorists.

He said: “The fuel supply chain has a moral duty to pass on recent lower wholesale costs to motorists, fairly and truthfully.

“So, will the fuel supply chain pass on wholesale falls to UK’s drivers? I doubt it!

“Mainly because analysts’ forecasts show the next 12 months will see oil hovering around $80 (£60) per barrel.

“And that prediction will allow oil companies and wholesalers free reign to keep retail prices high.

“They must end their shameless unchecked greed and perennial profiteering of the world’s highest taxed drivers.

“Pump prices should be 4p to 6p lower now. For decades the fuel supply chain, notably a few wholesalers have ripped off drivers at will.

“If the leader of the free world now suspects foul play with US pump prices, our Government, wallowing in the billions of extra VAT because of eye watering filling up costs, must follow Joe Biden’s lead and scrutinise the same opaque pump pricing processes here in Blighty.

“At FairFuelUK we are raising signatures to get the Competition and Markets Authority to open an enquiry into the fuel supply chain’s secret pump pricing process.

“Along with FairFuelUK and dozens of backbench MPs, led by Robert Halfon, the introduction of an Independent Pump Price Monitoring Body, PumpWatch is now even more critical.

“If gas, electricity, water, and telecoms have pricing watchdogs, why not give similar consumer protection to 37 million drivers filling up at the pumps?”
