Currently, there are over 600 Superchargers in the UK, which are exclusively for Tesla owners. In a tweet, Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to a statement made by another user which praised Tesla for advancing electric vehicle charging technology.

He responded by saying: “We created our own connector, as there was no standard back then & Tesla was only maker of long range electric cars.

“It’s one fairly slim connector for both low & high power charging.

“That said, we’re making our Supercharger network open to other EVs later this year.”

In a follow up tweet, he confirmed that this would gradually come into place in all countries.

This will come as welcome news to those who own electric vehicles in the UK.

There are plans in place by the Government to expand the electric charging network with £300 million pledged by Ofgem.

The energy regulator said the investment is for over 200 low carbon projects, including the development of 1,800 new ultra-rapid charging points.

This is in addition to the already £40 billion that has been pledged towards clean energy.

The Supercharger network is the highest rated among electric car drivers, according to the latest Zap-Map satisfaction survey.

Tesla’s network topped the ratings of 16 service providers, achieving an overall score of 4.8 out of five in the poll of 1,500 EV owners.

With a Supercharger, the latest Tesla Model S can add 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes.

The online response to the idea has been quite negative, with many Twitter users criticising the billionaire for the move.
