Rumour: BS6 Mahindra TUV300 launch in July 2020

We had earlier reported that the Mahindra TUV300 was not being upgraded to meet BS6 emission norms and hence had been removed from the website.

However, it is now said that the BS6 version of the SUV is likely to be launched soon. According to an employee of Mahindra’s Pune plant, the car is likely to go on sale in July 2020.

The TUV300 was seen testing in July 2019. Along with a new powertrain, the updated TUV300 is expected to get a few exterior updates.

The BS4 version of the sub-4m SUV was powered by a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produced 100 BHP @ 3,750 rpm and 240 Nm @ 1,600-2,800 rpm. It was paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT.

NHAI suffers data loss in cyberattack

According to a media report, all the data on National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) servers was lost after last week’s ransomware attack.

There could be various reasons that lead to the breach. It is said that weak cybersecurity infrastructure, lax monitoring and outdated legacy software were some of them.

According NHAI officials, while there was a loss of data on the servers and a breach in the hardware, they had a backup loaded on the mail server.

Following this cyber attack, CERTin, which handles computer security emergencies, has started rigorous monitoring. Meanwhile, the investigation to ascertain from where the attack originated is still ongoing.

Will There Be a 7th Gen Camaro?

Rumors abound, but it doesn’t look good for another generation of the iconic Camaro.

First off, in the interest of full disclosure, we don’t know any more about the fate of the 7th generation Chevy Camaro than most online psychics. The only people that do know, at GM, have a habit of saying almost nothing about anything future product related. But speculation is fun. It was a great chance to have our friend, vehicle designer Micheal Castiglione, sketch up what he thought a 7th gen Camaro could look like in this age of MPG-driven aerodynamics. See more of his rendering artwork HERE. He does our Week To Wicked art, so check it out.

That said, it’s starting to look like 2023 will be a repeat of the year 2002 for the Camaro and its legion of fans. Those that remember the dark days of ’02, when the 4th gen Camaro ceased production with no replacement in sight, will get a serious case of deja vu soon when history looks to repeat itself. From everything we heard swirling in the rumor mill, initial work on the 7th gen Camaro at GM has ceased with the teams being assigned to stretch out the 6th gen’s shelf life.

See all 6 photos

It’s not all bad news, though. Chevrolet is adding an LT1 model to the Camaro lineup, which will give cheaper V-8 power to the masses. Yep, where you used to have to get the SS package to gain a V-8, you can now do that with the less expensive trim package. For 2020 they also ditched the front nose treatment that was reviled by just about everyone. There are also still strong rumors swirling about a 6th generation Z/28 variant.

Still, that doesn’t help us after 2023 when the flowchart ends for the 6th gen Camaro. When the 5th gen debuted for the 2010 model year, sales went through the roof, but since then sales have been trending downward with just 51,000 units sold in the 2018 model year.

However, the main factor that will kill the 6th gen will be the end of GM’s Alpha platform, which the Camaro rides on. Newer designs, such as the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 use the A2XX platform, which we can assume would have been the basis for the 7th gen Camaro, as well. Add in that the Camaro’s biggest proponent at GM, its chief engineer Al Oppenheiser, was reassigned to the electric car team, and it’s easy to see why Camaro fans are feeling hopeless. One could also opine that this hints at an eventual electric Camaro.

Still, GM has never stated the Camaro is dead, just delayed, so most likely we will just be facing another hiatus like we did between the 4th and 5th generation cars. This seems more likely since the Camaro nameplate is one of GM’s more valuable brands and the car’s following is legion. We can only hope for a 7th generation of Camaro, but it looks unlikely until 2025 or 2026 at the earliest. But then again, Camaro fans have shown a propensity toward patience. Besides, it might be worth the wait.

Street Outlaws: Race Night in America Brings the Best No Prep Racing Teams Together

Drag racing fans can get their fix as they watch teams from across the country compete for a $100,000 prize.

We’ve covered drag racing in all its forms over the years, and the perennial fan favorite is what can generally be called street-car racing: registered and road-legal cars that pull double duty. They have enough street manners to participate in something like HOT ROD Power Tour or Drag Week, yet still accel at their main objective, which is to be an effective race car. Outlaw grudge and No Prep racing have been extremely popular for nearly a decade, spawning several race series at local tracks around the country, as well as a few TV shows. One of the latest is Street Outlaws: Race Night in America.

A spinoff of Street Outlaws: Memphis, Race Night in America takes the popular Street Outlaws format, pioneered in Oklahoma City, but adds a concentrated regional competition into the mix and sweetened the recipe with a $100,000 purse to the winner. In this series, eight teams from across the country shoot it out in an elimination format until there is one winning team. That team must then face the team from Memphis to determine the ultimate winner of the big cash prize.

The racing is done on a street in Memphis, with the final race happening on a lonely road outside of Las Vegas. The format will feel familiar, with lots of trash talking and even more censor bleeping, but the cars are cool, and the racers are interesting. Like all these shows, we wish more time was spent on technical information about the cars, but viewers do get an insider’s look at some of the strategy and psychology involved when trying to outwit an opponent in competition. It also shows just how much power many of these cars are making and how dangerous racing them can be. One of the first pair of cars down the track, er street, suffered a violent crash, leaving a heavily damaged car and a shaken, but otherwise unhurt, driver. In other races, you’ll see nitrous explosions, snapped blower belts, and a fair amount of fisticuffs. And that’s just in the first episode!

Volvo issues largest recall in company history for seat belt issue

Volvo on Wednesday announced the recall of 2.18 million vehicles globally to repair weak front seat belts, Automotive News reported.

The largest recall in the Swedish brand’s history covers approximately 308,000 vehicles in the U.S. made between 2006-2019. The issue is degradation of a steel cable in the front seat belts that over time could result in “reduced seat belt restraint function,” the company said in a statement. The automaker said it had not received any reports of crashes or injuries related to the issue.

Affected vehicles include the Volvo S60, S60 Cross Country, V60, V60 Cross Country, and XC60, as well as the V70, XC70, and S80 formerly sold in the U.S.

Volvo will contact owners and dealers will fix the front seat belts free of charge. Owners can check the status of their car at Volvo’s recall website.

Here's The Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing Preparing For An M3 Fist Fight

Cadillac - Here's The Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing Preparing For An M3 Fist Fight - News

Disappointed by the lack of power developed by the Cadillac CT4-V relative to its ATS-V predecessor? Worry not – as confirmed a few months ago, the pointy end of the range will actually be represented by the incoming CT4-V Blackwing. And thanks to these new spy shots, we can have our first proper look at Caddy’s incoming BMW M3 fighter.

The prototype seen at the General Motors Milford Proving Ground may be liberally caked in camouflage, but it’s easy to see what’s changed compared to the inline-four-powered CT4-V. There’s a redesigned front bumper with a low splitter, new side skirts, and a bigger spoiler on the bootlid.

Despite the name, neither this car nor its hopped up CT5 brother will receive the Blackwing V8, which has been largely abandoned by GM. Instead, the CT4-V is expected to take an updated version of the ATS-V‘s twin-turbo 3.6-litre V6, with the power increased beyond the 455bhp it offered previously. The CT5-V will also use the engine from its predessor – the CTS-V – meaning there’ll be a 6.2-litre ‘LT4’ V8 stuffed under the hood. Lovely.

The V6 will be hooked up to a torque converter automatic gearbox, or if preferred, a manual gearbox. MagneRide adaptive dampers will likely be fitted as standard, and we’d anticipate a lower ride height plus a wider track than the normal CT4-V. When the General Motors subsidiary first confirmed the car’s existence, it said that the Blackwing models will represent “the apex of Cadillac performance and driver engagement.”

Along with the testing at Milford, Blackwing prototypes have also been sent around various famous tracks across the USA. Each is said to have lapped Virginia International Raceway several seconds faster than their forebears.

We should hopefully see the CT4-V and CT5-V Blackwings sans camo before the end of the year.

This Is The Ineos Grenadier 'Defender Successor'

This Is The Ineos Grenadier 'Defender Successor' - News

The new Land Rover Defender has a much broader remit than the one that went out of production a few years ago. Sure, it can still handle the rough stuff, but the luxury and technology side of the equation has been cranked right up, as has the price – the range starts at £45,240.

But what if you don’t want all the new fripperies? What if you need a vehicle whose sole focus is all the utilitarian, roughty toughty stuff? The answer these days typically lies in a pick-up, but Ineos Automotive – the four-wheeled offshoot of a chemical company – is banking on a decent number of buyers wanting a ‘true successor’ to the Defender. So it made one.

This Is The Ineos Grenadier 'Defender Successor' - News

The Ineos Grenadier is the vehicle in question, revealed this week in official images for the first time. It looks incredibly similar to the old Defender, with a few Mercedes G-Class hints, which might be a side effect of Magna Steyr being involved.

Magna, the company responsible for producing the first and second-generation versions of the boxy G-Wagen, is Ineos’ engineering partner. On the engine front, BMW will be supplying inline-six petrol and diesel uniots mated to ZF automatic gearboxes.

This Is The Ineos Grenadier 'Defender Successor' - News

Those are the right kind of companies to partner with, but Ineos’ own team is a little lighter on automotive experience. The endeavour is fronted by Dirk Heilmann, an Ineos employee for 20 years who is taking on a car industry role for the first time. Speaking to Car Throttle sister publication Auto Express, Heilmann reckoned this was both a good and a bad thing.

“We’ve got a very talented bunch of automotive designers and engineers we’re working very closely with, which is massively beneficial and helpful, he said, adding, “But equally, I think, being from a different industry and thinking about things in a slightly different way, I think that’s also helped a lot as well.”

The Grenadier is named after the London pub in which the project was originally devised

Meanwhile, chief designer Toby Ecuyer was originally an architect and was designing superyachts not so long ago. “If you can design one thing, you can design another…So, if you can design a toaster well, I think you can design a car really well, too. I think it’s more to do with your designing principles than anything else,” he said.

Although Magna will do much of the development work, assembly will take place in Bridgend, Wales. Beyond that, we don’t know a whole lot, but the project still has some way to go, with first customer deliveries not expected to take place until 2022.

Ex-presidential Mercedes W124 Ambulance found; being restored

A Mercedes W124 Ambulance which once belonged to the President of India has been spotted rusting in Kerala. It is said that the car is now undergoing a restoration.

The 1988 W124 Krankenwagen (Ambulance) is said to be the only one in the country and belonged to the Rashtrapati Bhavan for nearly two decades. It was used as a medical car in the presidential convoy in the 1990s. The car was also seen in PV Narasimha Rao’s convoy during the 1995 Republic Day parade.

The W124 is one of the last over-engineered, mechanically-simple and electronically-minimal cars from the Mercedes stable and was launched in 1985. In India, the car was manufactured by the Mercedes-Tata JV and is popular among enthusiasts.
